Countries Banning ChatGPT ❌
Italy became the first Western country to ban ChatGPT. So why'd they do it? You guessed it: privacy concerns. Italy cited the following reasons for their decision:
1) OpenAI did not make it explicit they were collecting personal data. Italy also claims that OpenAI has "no legal basis" to collect and store as much data on users as they do.
2) A recent data leak exposed users' emails and credit card information. A couple weeks prior to that, there was also the problem of certain users being able to see other people's chat history. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise that I'm too broke to afford GPT-4.
3) They do not actually verify that users were over 13 years old when they sign up as mandated in their own terms of service.
Italy is giving OpenAI 20 days to prove they haven't broken the rules otherwise they could face a $21M fine. And remember, this company was making revenue of $20M in 2021, so this is still a hefty fine for them (if we choose to ignore the fact they have over a $11B in investments 😬).
Also, the Italian ban on ChatGPT can be circumvented relatively easily by use of a VPN or PizzaGPT (great name). At least, I assume that's what PizzaGPT is for. I can't really tell because the webpage is all in Italian. 🤌
Italy is not the only country to have banned ChatGPT. China, Afghanistan, Russia, and others have all implemented bans (although these countries are generally at odds with the US so that makes sense). Germany and other countries in the EU are currently considering whether to follow suit for violations agains the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
President Biden Addresses the State of AI 📣
On Tuesday, President Biden gave his two cents about AI. While he acknowledged the potential benefits of AI in tackling issues like disease and climate change, he also stressed the importance of addressing potential risks of AI to society, national security, and the economy. He also made a point to emphasize that companies should focus on ensuring that their products are secure before releasing them to the general public. However, despite his message, the barrage of AI services being launched daily shows no signs of slowing down.
I do think President Biden does bring up a good point. All of these applications (probably numbering in the tens of thousands now) cannot be secure in the way they handle and process data. Just a little something to think about whenever you go binge out on AI tools (as I often do).
When asked to comment further on if AI is dangerous, Biden in a patently Biden statement said, "It remains to be seen. Could be". Biden will be meeting with his scientific council, known as PCAST, to get better appraised of the developing situation with AI (he should subscribe to the newsletter). With the recent calls from many bigwigs like Elon Musk to halt the development of larger LLM models and for government intervention, it will be interesting to see what stance the government ends up taking when it comes to AI in America. Hopefully, at the end of it, I'll still have a job.
Your New Finance Guru: BloombergGPT 💸
Bloomberg has released their own LLM model trained on a large corpus of their proprietary data, supplemented with data from the internet (they say its about half and half). BloombergGPT is designed explicitly to handle financial tasks and with it's beefy 50 billion parameters it outperforms many of the financial AI models on the market. Bloomberg's reasoning for developing BloombergGPT is that "the complexity and unique terminology of the financial domain warrant a domain-specific model. BloombergGPT". And after trying to get all my tax documents in order, I completely agree 100%.
So why is this interesting, beyond BloombergGPT's immediate capabilities (financial sentiment analysis, news classification, Q/A, financial tasks, ect.). It's interesting because it may point to a broader trend where more and more companies that are not "AI companies" start building their own LLM models, suited to their needs and trained on their own proprietary data. Just something to keep an eye on 👀.
Bing Binging Back Ads 😑
Bing is back in business with its shiny, new GPT-4 turbo-charged search engine and now they are looking to make some moolah. The company announced in a blog post that ads will be incorporated into Bing's chat outputs as 'Ad' citations. It's also exploring ways to share ad revenue with the actual content contributors.
Online publishers, who have been getting essentially ripped off by LLMs that gobble up their content for training, share a quiet hurrah. However, it remains to be seen whether Microsoft's "exploring" actually pans out into a profitable or equitable system.
As of right now, ChatGPT does not share citations or anything of the sort unless specifically asked in the prompt. There is also no revenue sharing system in place either at OpenAI. With all the lawsuits from publishers, coders, and artists, however, that may have to change.
Side note: I recently came across a new type of business model that I think makes a lot of sense for many of the emerging AI companies: it's called the "Give-to-Get Model". It's simple really. You hand over some data and you get corresponding access to these powerful AI models. The models get more data. You get more AI. The more data you feed it, the more powerful the model, the more features you get access to! The more powerful the model, the more power to the applications built on top of it for further monetization. Of course, this description oversimplifies drastically and for a more in-depth explanation of this business model, might I suggest you click on the oversized link below.
Midjourney Free Access Suspended 😟
More of a PSA then a news segment, The Week in ChatGPT's favorite generative AI art provider removes free access to their models in their Discord.
So, I cannot create images of Scooby Doo eating a Scooby snack, but this dude, Hypertoxin, gets to create an image of a "man walking"? It's a cruel world we live in.
They issued this temporary ban due to the recent influx of deepfakes of high profile figures like the Pope and Trump. Can people please stop making pictures of the pope in Balenciaga or Trump getting swarmed by police so I can go back to making pictures of Scooby Doo! Thank you!
Now For Some AI Products
PRODUCT 1: PrankGPT — Prank Your Friends with AI Generated Voice Calls 😂
Do I even need to write anything for this one? You all know what to do. The race is on. May the best prankster win! Also, I know it's ironic I've been expounding on data privacy in this edition and then give you something like this to use, but this is too good of an opportunity to pass up. PrankGPT
PRODUCT 2: Hey GPT: Replace Siri with ChatGPT
Well, paint me green and call me a pickle! I never thought I'd see the day where Apple would just let iPhone users replace their precious Siri with ChatGPT. But, apparently, I was wrong! The process is a little more in-depth, but should only take a couple minutes for those who want to try it out. I found a good guide here for those intrepid souls looking to oust Siri.
I haven't found a similar workaround for Android users, but then again, why would I want to. Just kidding guys. I love my Android and Apple subscribers equally.
Remember, if you have any AI products you want featured you know where to find me: @TheAIBloke.
Pretty Pictures With Midjourney
Well, after lackluster Twitter engagement for prompt-guessing, I've decided to just include these pretty pictures with the prompts for people to enjoy!
I honestly don't even know if this was AI generated or not. It was just sitting in the newbie discord channel with no prompt 🤷♂️.
Also, just a little interesting tidbit for you creative image generating folks, you can now get Midjourney to model a prompt off of an existing image by providing a URL to the other image. Opens a lot more possibilities, but of course what I'm seeing a lot of right now is people face-swapping with Mona Lisa. Da Vinci would be a bit nonplussed with all this generative AI stuff.
Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow (But Please Keep Reading LOL)
