ChatGPT Plugins 🔌
So you know how ChatGPT was originally restricted in the data it had access to. Like you couldn't ask it to surf the web for up to date info or have it access online services for you. Drumroll please...
Yeah, you can do some of that now 🥳. OpenAI released three plugins themselves that enable ChatGPT to 1) browse the internet, 2) act as an online code interpreter (with text to code completion), and 3) be a knowledge base retrieval plug in which allows you to augment access to existing data sources with ChatGPT. Even just these three plugins already open up a host of new possibilities. But it gets better. OpenAI now has plug ins for all of the services in the image below, with more on the way as I type this.
The most powerful one in my opinion is Zapier, since it can connect to hundreds if not thousands of other apps, so its like plugin cheat-code. OpenAI really is on a hot streak right now. Rephrased in the infamous words of Snoop Dogg:
Don't Mess with Microsoft 🥊😳
Mess with Microsoft and you could find yourself in deep doo-doo. So what's got them all riled up this time? Microsoft is issuing a warning to all their search competitors to stop using Bing's search data to power the development of their own AI search models.
Ok, couple of things to break down there. One, Microsoft licenses out Bing's search data to several search engines like Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, You.com, and Neeva. Didn't know that.
Two, Microsoft is essentially trying to get these search companies to not use Bing's search data as fodder for their AI-assistive search models, while still keeping their lucrative licensing deals in place. Microsoft really pulling a Mary Antionette here except instead of cake, it's valuable search data. The novelties of the 21st century never cease to amaze.
Microsoft wants compliance otherwise they will have to rely on "legal persuasive tactics". Basically, Microsoft wants Bing to corner the AI search market and doesn't want anybody else building AI search off of their data. They have already reached out to two companies they've found in breach of compliance. Let's see if their warning is enough to head off other companies using Bing search data. My prediction: Microsoft is telling the kids to get off their lawn, but they're gonna keep coming until someone gets hurt 👀🫣.
Big Tech Gobbling Up AI Talent 🫣
Man, the job market for developers is a confusing time right now. Tens of thousands of developers got laid off across Big Tech the last couple months and now Big Tech is back on the prowl for AI/ML engineers. Get a load of these guys.
The reason for this is with the AI race heating up, Big Tech needs to revamp a lot of their product offerings with the additional intelligence AI can provide to stay competitive. They also don't want to loose market share to the startups that are flooding the space. Companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon (the biggest AI/ML hirer right now), Stripe, Morgan Stanley, and many others are leading the charge with big pushes into AI across the board. So will big tech end up on top? The government seems to think so and the Fair Trade Commission is on high alert and anxious to slap big tech with a couple anti-competitive lawsuits. Love it when they do that.
But if we take a look at the state of the field right now, it seems that most of the work is being done outside of Big Tech. It's upstart companies like OpenAI, Midjourney, and Stability AI that are leading the charge into the new horizons of AI. Maybe Big Tech will just end up being the distribution that delivers packaged AI products to the majority as these new companies continue to push the boundaries of what can be done with AI.
Back to jobs though, I'm sure you must be wondering how AI might impact you and yours as mass-adoption inches nearer and nearer. I have too. So have the people at Goldman Sachs and here's their take on it for those of you interested.
A group of economists at Goldman Sachs published a report showcasing AI's potential to spur massive productivity gains and job creation over the next decade.
According to the team, "if generative AI delivers on its promised capabilities..."
Annual gross GDP would leap 7% this decade, meaning a cool extra $7 trillion.
US labor productivity could jump 1.5% annually over the next decade.
And while most of the economy will see their jobs impacted by AI (70%), AI will likely complement your work, not replace it.
Phew 😮💨, but then again we really don't know what will happen with any certainty, so that is not to say you should not take the time to learn new, valuable skill sets.
Elon and Others Call for an AI Hiatus 🛑
The rate of AI progress these past couple years has been truly mind boggling. And some peoples minds are just too boggled because they are calling for an AI cease and desist at least for a couple months. For example, Gary Marcus (professor of Psychology) posted about a letter that proposes a pause of 6 months on training any new LLMs bigger than GPT-4. If not, Dr. Marcus says governments should come forward to stop new training. Gary claims that the signers of his open letter include bigwigs like Elon Musk, CEOs, professors, and even other leading AI researchers. Although who knows with this guy.
Some people are calling into question the validity of his signatory claims. But I believe the Elon stuff at least.
Elon was one of the founding figures of OpenAI. Elon and Sam's shared vision at the time was to introduce to the world to AI in a safe and controlled way, but Elon isn't sure he likes the way things have taken a turn (remember how he was looking at starting his own ChatGPT rival).
Now For Some AI Products
PRODUCT 1: Learn.xyz— Feel the Learn 📚🔥
Ever wish you could learn something about anything at any time? Learn.xyz is trying to make that happen, with AI generated lesson content that you can follow along with to learn just about anything. In my homepage feed I was seeing a lot of blockchain lessons, but I searched and found lessons on a variety of topics, like quantum physics, large language models, and whether penguins poop a lot (haven't gotten along to completing that one yet unfortunately). Platforms like Learn.xyz have an inherent advantage over regular e-learning platforms in that they can currently pump out lessons at a rate regular e-learning platforms cannot match. This means they can stay relevant faster. Is this a glimpse of what the next coming of Coursera and other e-learning services looks like?
🔥 #FeeltheLearn 🔥
They should really make that their slogan. Look at me coming up with all this amazing free branding. I should go into consulting.
PRODUCT 2: Baked.ai — Turn your idea into art with AI 🎨
Baked.ai is bringing customization to the next level. Choose any of their product offerings: phone cases, coffee mugs, notebooks, poster, T-shirts, hoodies, and others and create your own AI art to go with it. Think of it like CustomInk, but for more stuff than just T-shirts and you can create designs in the same time it takes you to write a couple sentences!
I think this could be the future of phone cases and could also be an amazing option for personalized birthday gifts or pranks (for me, mostly pranks). Also, I'm in the market for a truly obscene phone case so if you guys happen to create anything that matches that description please don't hesitate to let me know.

Pretty Pictures With Midjourney
Well, after lackluster Twitter engagement for prompt-guessing, I've decided to just include these pretty pictures with the prompts for people to enjoy!
Prompt: Future Flying Hilton Hotels in the air above the clouds, taken using a Canon EOS R camera with a 50mm f/1.8 lens, f/2.2 aperture, shutter speed 1/200s, ISO 100 and natural light, Full Body, Hyper Realistic Photography, Cinematic, Cinema, Hyperdetail, UHD, Color Correction, hdr, color grading, hyper realistic CG animation --upbeta --q 2 --v 5 -
Dang this guy specifying what camera to make this image with? That's some next level prompt engineering. But also Hilton should def make this in a couple decades if they're still around.
